Did you know?
As May is designated “Youth Service Month”, here are two of the many youth-oriented programs conducted annually by Rotary Clubs.

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA)
This activity began in Queensland in 1959, spread to all Rotary Districts in Australia and New Zealand, and in 1971 was adopted as a recommended youth program of Rotary International. In 2023, it is an activity conducted in many parts of the world. While details vary, RYLA is aimed at late teen, early twenty year olds, and takes the form of a week-long residential activity involving leadership and personal development activities and speakers. Those attending are selected and sponsored by local Rotary Clubs. Over the years, RCWE has sponsored many young people to attend RYLA, beginning in 1969-1970 when the club was only in its third year of operation. RYLA has been significantly impacted by COVID; our last attendee was in 2015-2016.

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN)
This is another youth program initiated in Australia, beginning in 1980. As with RYLA, details vary from District to District, though in general terms, it is aimed at junior to mid-teens and takes place over a weekend with personal and leadership development activities. Again, RCWE has sponsored many young people to RYPEN, beginning in 1988-1989, though in recent years, applicants have been hard to find and COVID has impacted.
